Cognitive collapse induced by binary decisions of comparable consequence.

Introduction

Binary decisions of comparable consequence induce a characteristic cognitive collapse [1], observable wherever a researcher must choose between two equally career-defining options before lunch. We analyse the underlying mechanism and its sweat signature.

Method

Decision latency tt was measured across nn alternatives under controlled sweat-load. Observed behaviour follows a degenerate Hick law

with the coefficient bb diverging as deadlines approach. Participants were presented with classic dilemmas, including fix the bug versus document the bug, and submit now versus read it one more time.

Results

Pressing both buttons is locally optimal but globally career-limiting, in agreement with first-person accounts from both options [2]. Equation (1) held until n=2n = 2, at which point latency became unbounded for 71% of trials and a third, undeclared button was characterised. The third button is always labelled later.

Conclusion

We provide a checklist for recognising the third button before it presses you, together with a wallet card for deadline emergencies.
