A thermodynamic model of remaining seated in a burning room while asserting that everything is fine.

Introduction

Remaining seated in a burning room while asserting that everything is fine is a cornerstone of doctoral practice [1]. Despite decades of field observation, the phenomenon has lacked a quantitative footing, and existing coping models assume the participant eventually leaves the room. We present the first thermodynamic treatment that does not.

Method

Calmness is modelled as a renewable resource with diminishing returns near deadlines. For room temperature TT and submission distance dd (in days), composure follows the logistic collapse

where TcT_c is the critical everything-is-fine threshold and C0C_0 the composure endowment fixed at enrolment. Twelve participants were observed across three review cycles; coffee intake was treated as a latent variable.

Results

Three ignition profiles were observed in the wild: slow smoulder, reviewer two, and the grant deadline flashover. In all cases participants reported being fine; instrumentation suggested otherwise. Equation (1) fitted the collapse with alarming precision, and a meta-analysis [2] corroborates the discrepancy between self-report and smoke density.

Conclusion

We propose mitigation strategies that do not require leaving the room, including hat acquisition, the strategic mug refill, and scheduled acceptance. Future work will extend the model to rooms with more than one exit, should any be found.
