Distracted Boyfriend: A Study in Attention Economy

A taxonomy of stock-photo infidelity tropes and the visual hierarchy of distracted-boyfriend variants.

Introduction

Stock-photo infidelity tropes dominate attention-economy discourse, yet their visual grammar remains under-theorised [1]. The canonical configuration of subject, partner, and passing alternative has been reproduced across every domain of public argument, from monetary policy to JavaScript frameworks. We deconstruct the configuration and propose a taxonomy of distracted-boyfriend variants suitable for peer review.

Method

Head-turn vectors were annotated across 412 derivative memes collected over three scraping seasons. Gaze deflection θ\theta was measured against the partner axis, and attention loss was modelled as an exponential decay

where A0A_0 denotes baseline devotion and kk the novelty coupling constant. Annotator agreement was excellent once the annotators stopped looking at other datasets.

Results

The head-turn vector is load-bearing: deflections beyond θ=38\theta = 38^\circ predicted total caption replacement, in line with Equation (1). Control-group observations [2] confirm that the partner already standing next to the subject registers the highest disapproval indices on record. Variant analysis identified three stable sub-genres, of which two were already out of fashion by submission time.

Conclusion

Researchers are advised to remain focused on the dissertation already standing next to them. Practical guidance is provided, together with a decision chart for recognising a passing alternative before the head completes its turn.
